Our hens are fed organically and spend the warmer months of the year enjoying our lush pastures. Eggs are collected daily and washed in warm water before being packaged, refrigerated, and available to you.

Q. Why do eggs need to be washed?

A. They don’t! Eggs naturally have a protective coating on them called the bloom. This coating keeps bacteria out of the egg and allows you to store eggs on the counter safely for weeks. However, if you do wash the eggs, they must be refrigerated!

Q. Why do you wash eggs with warm water?

A. The water that you use to wash your eggs should be warmer than the egg and it should be running (don’t let eggs just sit in water). This prevents bacteria from being sucked inside the egg as you wash off the bloom.

Q. What do you do with your hens during the winter?

A. We leave our hens out on pasture for as long as possible! However, for many months, it is just too cold for them to remain in the chicken tractor. During this time we do bring the hens into an insulated henhouse with just a small outdoor run. The hens are fed organic layer feed, scratch grain, grit, and whatever greens we can find for them, along with squash and pumpkins that were saved from our gardens.

Q. My egg has a stamp on it. What is that?

A.We think that people need more things to smile about. Because of this, we do randomly stamp fun sayings or pictures on some of our eggs. Don’t worry, this is special ink designed to be food-safe!
